Recently, two doctors from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, wrote a warning that a larger-than-usual outbreak of yellow fever in a rural Brazilian village could possibly spread across borders, much like the Zika virus. Dr. Anthony Fauci, one of two doctors who wrote an essay in the New England Journal of Medicine, said “travel-related cases of yellow fever could occur, with brief periods of local transmission in warmer regions such as the Gulf Coast states.”
Yellow fever is spread by mosquitos and can be fatal. With so many people traveling across the globe, it isn’t hard to see how an outbreak even in a small village can eventually spread across the world. The recent Zika outbreak and this new warning about yellow fever underline how important it is to protect yourself from mosquitos. One way to do that is to ensure you have protective screens over all of your windows and doors during the warm parts of the year.
