Spring is here, which means sunshine, flowers, new leaves…and mosquitos. Last year, the Zika virus ravaged many countries and even made its way up to the United States, infecting women in 44 states, and causing severe birth defects in 51 babies born in the U.S. Southern states, like Florida and Texas, along with Puerto Rico and American Samoa took the brunt of the disease.
As mosquito eggs begin to hatch, the question on many minds is – will Zika return? Unfortunately, the answer is probably yes. In fact, because many states enjoyed mild winters, the mosquito population may actually be larger this year, leading to more disease transmissions. Many states are already preparing to once again combat the spread of this harmful disease.
If you live in a state at risk for Zika, and especially if you and your partner are planning to try and get pregnant this year, it is imperative that you take as many precautions against mosquito bites as possible. That means wearing repellant or even long sleeves outdoors and keeping mosquitos out of your home. One way to do this is with strong window screens made of metal mesh. Metal mesh can be made with openings so small that mosquitos won’t be able to fit through. That way, you can enjoy the beauty of spring without putting your health or future child at risk!
